Appello per la salvaguardia dell'unico corso di Peace Studies in Italia:
il corso di laurea in Scienze per la Pace dell'Università di Pisa

Il corso di laurea di Pisa, ormai unico in Italia, è nato come esigenza di una cultura internazionale della
pace, sorta nel secondo dopoguerra, insieme a tutti gli altri istituti e Università di Peace Studies, con
brillanti esempi negli Stati Uniti e nel nord Europa, e tutt’oggi operanti. I nostri studi offrono
l’opportunità, sempre più necessaria, di trovare una soluzione alternativa e nonviolenta alla risoluzione
dei conflitti. La caratteristica di interdisciplinarità del nostro approccio di studi è fondamentale per
acquisire uno sguardo completo alla realtà odierna. La pace non è assenza di conflitto, ma costruzione
propositiva di una realtà migliore. La ricerca della pace è, quindi, studio scientifico e strategico di
proposte e metodi concreti.
Pensiamo che il nostro Paese abbia bisogno di continuità culturale al pensiero nonviolento dei filosofi e
maestri che tutto il mondo studia e ci riconosce: Aldo Capitini, Danilo Dolci, Lanza dal Vasto, Lorenzo
Milani, Tonino Bello, Ernesto Balducci. Questa continuità culturale deve rimanere negli ambienti
accademici universitari italiani. La didattica e la formazione sono necessari affinché i processi culturali
di filosofia e pratica della nonviolenza non tramontino oggi. Essi contraddistinguono il nostro percorso
universitario e sono gli unici strumenti di un autentico cambiamento sociale. Se Scienze per la Pace
scomparisse verrebbe meno quell’idea di pace che ormai da sola cerca di farsi strada in mezzo ad altre:
parliamo di una lotta a difesa delle istituzioni democratiche nel nostro paese e nel mondo
esclusivamente senz’armi. Questo tipo di studi non può non essere compreso e non avere pari dignità
all’interno del sistema universitario italiano. L’Università italiana ha bisogno di un percorso completo
che crei una nuova grammatica ed etica della politica e dell’agire sociale.
Inseriti in un contesto italiano ed europeo sempre più sordo alle esigenze dei popoli al di là del
Mediterraneo, in cui la recente crisi finanziaria ed economica non può avere risposta se non con un
alternativo modello di sviluppo, assistiamo da tempo ad una precarizzazione della cultura, che è e
sempre sarà critica sociale; ad un attacco a qualsiasi voce fuori dal coro, un mondo in cui la parola
“Pace” viene depauperata del proprio significato. Ma qualcuno a Pisa è riuscito, negli anni, a creare un
centro di studi “fuori dal coro”, in cui gli studenti possano cimentarsi nella ricerca di un'alternativa.
Oggi questo corso rischia di essere dimezzato, vanificandone sostanzialmente il progetto. I motivi sono
molteplici, dai tagli economici degli ultimi governi alla mancanza di sostegno politico affinché un corso
del genere esista.
I laureati in passato e coloro che si laureeranno prossimamente, saranno condannati a un’esistenza
puramente testimoniale di questo percorso formativo. L’Ateneo di Pisa, così come il Comune di Pisa
proclamatosi “Comune per la Pace”, si sono vantati in passato della presenza di questo fiore
all’occhiello e del prestigio che Scienze per la Pace ne dava. Ora, noi studenti siamo i promotori di una
difesa di questo patrimonio culturale che rischia di estinguersi. Per questo vogliamo dare concretezza a
ciò che studiamo, lottando senza violenza, affinché il corso non sia chiuso né resti a metà. La
completezza degli studi, data soltanto dal percorso quinquennale, è garanzia di un approccio serio e
scientifico alla nostra ricerca.
Il potere ha sempre temuto le critiche. Ma se uniamo le nostre voci, se facciamo sentire che siamo in
tanti e che questo corso è necessario, siamo sicuri che riusciremo ad evitare qualsiasi pericolo.

Petition to save the only Peace Studies university course in Italy:
Pisa University's "Scienze per la Pace"1
The university course in Pisa, the only one of its kind in Italy, was set up out of a need for an
international culture of peace which came about after the second world war, when several institutions
were created in northern Europe and the USA, and which are still operating today. Our studies, which
are needed more and more, offer us the opportunity to find alternative, non-violent solutions to
conflict resolution. Our interdisciplinary approach is fundamental for the analysis of what is happening
in the world. In our opinion peace doesn't mean the mere absence of conflicts, it does mean active
construction of a better reality. Therefore, the quest for peace is led by a scientific approach and a
strategic study of various proposals and specific methods.
We think that our country needs the continuity of the non-violent culture of our philosophers and
masters that are studied all over the world, such as Aldo Capitini, Danilo Dolci, Lanza dal Vasto,
Lorenzo Milani, Tonino Bello, Ernesto Balducci. This cultural continuity must remain in the academic
world of the Italian university. Teaching and training are necessary to avoid the decline of non-violent
philosophy, culture and experiences. Our course is based on them and we think they are the only tools
for a real change in our society. If Scienze per la Pace ceased to exist, the will to defend democratic
institutions both in Italy and in the rest of the world without using arms would be even weaker than
now. Peace studies cannot fail to be included and not have equal dignity within the Italian university
system. The Italian University needs a thorough course of peace studies to create new cognitive and
ethical foundations for politics and social action.
In an Italian and European context which is daily more and more more impervious to the needs of
those on the other side of Mediterranean Sea, in a geographic zone where the reply to the recent
economic and financial crisis can only be an alternative model of development for some time now a
fierce attack on culture in our country has been in act, an attack on any different voice and dissonant
idea. The meaning of the word "peace" is being impoverished. But there were some in Pisa who were
able to start up this different school. Today this course is in danger of being halved, frustrating its
purposes, its project. There are several reasons: from the government's cuts to the lack of any real
support inside the university for the existence of this course, which does not fit into the normal
scheme of things.
Students who have got their Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree over the years, and those who are going to
graduate soon, will be condemned to being simple witnesses of this university course. The University
and Municipality of Pisa (which likes to describe itself as a "peace municipality"), have praised
themselves in the past for the prestige that our course gave them, but now they are abandoning us. We,
the students, are standing as the only defence of this cultural heritage. We want to give concreteness to
what we study by struggling without violence so that this course will not close nor be halved.
Completeness of studies is the guarantee of a serious and scientific approach to our research.
Power will always be afraid of criticism. But if our voices join together, if there are large numbers of us
and if we can convince those who take the decisions that this course is necessary, we are sure we will be
able to hold off the threat.
